Tinnitus meaning "ringing" is the perception of sound within the human ear (ringing of the ears) when no actual sound is present .It is commonly described as a hissing, roaring, ringing or whooshing sound in one or both ears.
The sound ranges from high to low pitch and can be a single tone, multi-tonal, or noise-like, having no tonal quality. It may be constant, pulsing or intermittent. It may begin suddenly or progress gradually.
Tinnitus is not a disease, but a condition that can result from a wide range of underlying causes. The most common cause is noise-induced hearing loss.
Other causes include neurological damage (multiple sclerosis), ear infections, oxidative stress, emotional stress, foreign objects in the ear, nasal allergies that prevent (or induce) fluid drain, wax build-up, and exposure to loud sounds.
According to the ayurvedic point of view, it is due to imbalance of vata. Pran vayu is a subdosha of vata which is present in head region which controls all the functions of cerebral functions
When vayu covered with doshas taking faulty passage get located in sound carrying channels it perceives various types of sound, this disease is known as pranada or Karnanada (ringing in the ears).
According to Ayurveda vata body type people are prone to suffer with high frequency, pitta body type people with moderate frequency and kapha body type people have the tendency to suffer with low frequency sounds.
